Zone Rep Report October 2016

Hello Zone 9ers,

August in the Monterey Bay area means CAR WEEK!! There’s so much to see and experience in Monterey, Carmel, and Laguna Seca and I focused on the third annual PCA Werks Reunion and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Werks was an amazing display of hundreds of Porsches, beautifully displayed at the Rancho Canada Golf Club. It was overwhelming and I know I didn’t see many of the cars. The Blood Orange 1965 356 below was restored by a friend of mine, Martin Steger, of Carolina Coachworks in North Carolina. I love the color and it’s obvious that Martin worked very hard to accomplish such a beautiful restoration.

Before and after Werks, I went to Laguna Seca to watch the practice and qualifying race groups. This year’s featured marque was BMW and they were celebrating their 100th Anniversary. I’ve attended the Reunion on several occasions and it’s always a thrill to watch race cars from the 1920’s all the way up to the early 1990’s. My two favorite viewing areas are in the stands at Start/Finish and at the Corkscrew. This year, I joined my fellow PCA members at the PCA tent, with a perfect view of the track at Turn 4.

The next Sunday after the Monterey trip, I went to the 46th Annual Corrales Round-up and parked my 911 among 70+ other Porsches. For the past 40-some years, the Round-up has been held outside the beautiful home of Dave & Ann Stinchcomb, but this year, they decided to relocate, due to the potential of large branches or trees falling onto the cars. The G.O. Farm turned out to be a great location and there was plenty of room for all of the cars. The featured models this year were the Caymans and the Turbos. Also new this year was Mexican food and birthday cake – yum!

On Labor Day weekend, I traveled to Durango, CO, to join many other car enthusiasts at the home of Alpine Mountain Region members, Chris and Pam Vivolo. Chris has been hosting a big car show & BBQ in a grassy field at his house, for the past few years and it was amazing to see the variety of cars that showed up. One couple brought a Model T and a Packard, and several people showed up in 911’s and Caymans. Chris staged the cars in 2 groups: European and American. I missed seeing Chris’s Cayman GT4 Clubsport, but it was in Sonoma, CA, waiting for Chris to compete in the next Pirelli Cup race.

Still to come in September are the Club Races in Colorado and Utah.

Hope to see you around the Zone!
