Zone Rep Report July 2015

Hello Zone 9ers,

During the last 2 weekends in May, I was able to attend Roadrunner Region’s Fiesta New Mexico and Intermountain Region’s Amazing Rally. The socializing with Fiesta started on Thursday night at The Lodge, north of Santa Fe, and it was great to see old friends and meet new Fiesta attendees. Then the next morning, many of the attendees met for a drive-out to the Santa Fe Ski Basin. I couldn’t go because I had to work, but I joined everyone for the gimmick rally/drive-out to Taos. We took the High Road and with all the recent rains, the countryside was green and beautiful. Live mariachi music and special “Porsche Margaritas” – what could be better for a Welcome Reception?

The next morning, everyone cleaned their cars and got them ready for the concours at the Taos Country Club. I had never been to that area outside of Taos and the homes and views were spectacular. Fiesta Chairs, Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach, arranged for live music and the food was delicious. Joe Almers and his team did a great job of placing the cars, which made for perfect pictures every time.

On Sunday, there was a drive-out to Angel Fire and we got the chance to see more of the beautiful forests and meadows. Lunch was at Zebs and they did an outstanding job of feeding about 40 hungry tourists! After getting back to Taos from that drive-out, many Fiesta attendees joined Bob Blackwell on a tour to the Earthship Community, which is a collection of homes that were built with recycled materials. The goal of this community is to “live without polluting and without depleting our resources…”

That night, we had the Awards Banquet and the special guest speaker was Leonard Turnbeaugh, an accomplished 356 racer from northern Nevada. Leonard regaled us with stories of the big tracks that he’s raced at and he described some of the parts that his company, Neutekcams, designs and builds: pistons and cams.

Hats off to Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach and their team for creating and running a very fun Fiesta and for raising a lot of money for the Watermelon Ranch.

The weekend after Fiesta, I participated in Intermountain Region’s 6th Annual Amazing Rally and it was a lot of fun. My mom was my navigator and although we had some challenges, we appreciated the areas where the rally took us. We met at a 356 restoration shop south of Salt Lake City, Morris Brothers Motorsports, and then officially started the rally at Ken Garff Porsche in Lehi, UT. After the rally, we were joined by many other Intermountain Region members for a social at the dealership. There was a silent auction and lots of door prizes were handed out. Also as part of this rally, there was a fundraiser for Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Good job, Intermountain Region!

Parade is just around the corner so I’ll see lots of you in French Lick, Indiana!
