Zone Rep Report May 2013

Liz ShawIn the Zone by Liz Shaw

Hello fellow Zone 9’ers! For my April report, even though I submitted it late, I still wasn’t able to write about a couple of earlier events that had occurred. So now I’ll catch you up in this report. Near the end of February, West Texas Region held a fun poker run that started in Lamesa, TX. Six drivers from Lubbock joined six or seven drivers from Midland/Odessa. As Stan Cribbs reported, Lamesa is a small, non-descript town, but the enthusiasm of the poker people made up for that! There were 7 stops, where drivers picked up playing cards to make their poker hand. At the lunch stop (Pedroza’s Mexican Restaurant), prizes were awarded to the Best and Worst Poker Hands. Afterward, everyone made their way home and some people extended their drivers to put in a few more fun miles on their cars.

About a month later and further southwest in Texas, the Carrera Region held their monthly meeting at fellow PCA member, Lenny Loftin’s shop – Redline Racing. There were 15 cars in attendance, including David Gerli’s beautiful red 991 – and the line-up made quite the scene! During the meeting, El Paso Motorplex owner, Lyle Byrum, described some possible expansions to the Motorplex. A 1.4-mile road racing course is being proposed, and parking lot areas will be expanded. Keep your fingers crossed that funding is acquired and approved so that the new course could open as soon as Fall of 2014. Carrera Region President, Dan Thomas, will provide info on track membership buy-in options, etc. – as the info becomes available.

Speaking of new venues, Roadrunner Region will hold the Die Serie #4 autocross at a gargantuan parking lot near the Albuquerque international airport on May 11. Check the Roadrunner Region website for details.

Llano Estacado continues to have their monthly breakfast/membership meeting at Furr’s Cafeteria in Amarillo and I hope to get out there soon for one of the meetings. Even though the Region is very small, the members are like all of us from larger Regions – we love to talk cars as often as we can!

As reported earlier, Alpine Mountain, InterMountain, and Rocky Mountain Regions will have DE’s in April and the June Zone 9 report will have lots of details and pictures from 2 of the events (I will not be able to attend the IMR DE because I’ll be at the RMR DE that same weekend).
