Zone Rep Report January 2014

Liz ShawIn the Zone by Liz Shaw

It feels a little strange to be writing this for January 2014 but here goes. I thought the last two months of the year were going to be very busy for your humble Zone Rep but Mother Nature changed some of that! I was able to attend the PCA Tech Tactics in Ontario, CA, in November, but as of this writing, I was only able to attend two of the four Region holiday parties in December.

The PCA National Tech Tactics were held on November 23rd at the Porsche Training Facility. I arrived the day before and helped PCA VP Caren Cooper set up the reception areas for the next day’s attendees. The facility is HUGE! Behind the offices and training rooms is a gigantic warehouse of parts, which are eventually shipped to Porsche dealerships and independent shops all over the country.

This year’s Tech Tactics had a waiting list and there were over 130 PCA members in attendance! The day consisted of several sessions and we were divided into four groups. I listened to talks on Porsche maintenance, the GT3 America, tuning a 911, Porsche fuel injection, the 991 Turbo (the real thing was in the back of the room!), the Macan, and car detailing. Everything was first-class and I learned a lot.

At the end of the day, door prizes were given out and everyone received a goody bag with a t-shirt, Porsche lanyard, bottle of Griot’s Speed Shine, and USB key with a copy of all of the presentations, plus a PDF of the Porsche press information from the L.A. Auto Show. Oh, there were two other events where prizes were awarded: a scale-model “concours” and a radio-controlled car competition. All in all, a very fun day! I highly recommend attending the Tech Tactics and for next year, I’m going to plan my trip so that I can attend the L.A. Auto Show the same weekend.

November also proved to be a lucky month for Carrera Region’s Bill Walker, as he won a set of Toyo tires! In early November, all of the Zone Reps provided a name from each of their respective regions for the Top Instructor contest, sponsored by Toyo. Then National DE Chairman, Pete Tremper, drew a name for each Zone and Bill Walker was the winner from Zone 9! Congratulations, Bill, and thanks very much for instructing and helping drivers for many years.

I had scheduled trips to Amarillo, Abilene, and Colorado Springs for holiday parties, but as of this writing, I was only able to attend Llano Estacado’s party at the Amarillo Club on December 2nd. I always enjoy visiting with the friendly members from that region.

My trip to Abilene was canceled because of icy conditions and American Airlines conveniently canceled my flights into and out of Dallas. Given that I would have had a difficult, if not impossible time, getting to Colorado Springs by Sunday night, I canceled that trip, also. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate in my favor for the RMR party on December 14th.

I’ll get another chance to travel to Colorado Springs for the Zone 9 Presidents’ meeting in January. I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the new officers and reconnecting with some of the incumbent officers. Fred Veitch and his crew are helping tremendously and it’s going to be a fun weekend!
